Trek America 2016

Without a doubt, my trip with Trek America last summer was one of the best experiences of my life.

Santa Monica, California

Trek America is a travel company that hosts tours around the USA, Canada and Central America for young people, with a range of different locations, lengths and types of trips. You get a trip (3 weeks long in my case) with a guide  – hey Kaley! – who organises a whole host of things for you to do, and drives you cross-country in a van filled with a motley crew that will soon become your BFFs.

I did the Southern BLT tour, a budget lodging tour, where we stayed in hotels, hostels and motels as opposed to camping. We started in New York and finished in Los Angeles 21 days later.

We journeyed through Philadelphia and Washington DC to the country music-capital of Nashville, Tennessee, then onto Memphis – home of Elvis, the Civil Rights Movement and Sun Studios. Then it was onto raging New Orleans, full of swinging jazz on Frenchman Street, beignets at Cafe Du Monde, a swamp tour, a ghost tour, Marie Laveau’s House Of Voodoo and a wild night chasing tequila on Bourbon Street.

Texas was next – we stopped at Houston, Austin (Barton Springs and the live music were a highlights) and San Angelo – before we went to Carlsbad Caverns, Roswell, New Mexico, and spent a sunny Labor Day in Santa Fe. After that, we were into national park territory; we spent an amazing and eye-opening afternoon on a jeep tour in the spiritual haven of Monument Valley, learning about the Navajo culture, before going onto the Grand Canyon. Swelteringly hot at midday, freezing cold at the 5am sunrise and mild at the sunset (where we set on the edge and ate pizza), it’s even more breathtaking (and bigger) than any picture could ever capture.

Then it was onto a wild 48-hours in Las Vegas, full of casinos, a party limo tour, shopping and dancing at the Bellagio fountains (in 40 degree heat at 11pm…), before zooming down to San Diego for a beach day and our last group dinner in Coronado. Finally, we were dropped off in LA, spending a final emotional evening together at the Santa Monica pier.

This Trek America trip was full of sunny afternoons, endless road trips, stunning scenery, countless laughing fits and too many van sing-a-longs to mention. If you’re looking for an amazing experience crossing the great USA and a chance to spend time with a group of people that I can guarantee you’ll be incredibly attached to by the end, Trek America is the only way to go.
